2016 Goals

Have you ever stared off the new year with big goals? And I mean REALLY BIG GOALS?!

This year I have and the biggest one has been to train for my 3rd marathon which happens to be outside of the US and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s the original marathon, the one that started it all. The Athens, Greece Marathon! The one that ends in the 1896 Olympic stadium!

As a former swimmer and collegiate swimmer this is bigger than you realize! Just running in that stadium will be a fan-freaking-tastic memory but the fact that I will be there with my sister, cousin, and uncle will be an unmemorable memory!!

I can’t wait to make this happen and this will definitely be one of the highlights of 2016! I can’t wait to show you pictures and to make it happen! This is going be one fantastic year!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas is a little different in my house this year. Last year, my mom, sister and I all went up to my grandmothers house to spend Christmas with her and my mom’s side of the family. At the time, we didn’t know it would be the last Christmas that we would get to spend with my Grandmother. She loved every second of having her family there with her that day as much as she grumbled.

This year, we are doing Christmas differently. We are spending it with others that won’t have family around. It’s also 70℉ which is just not right.

Thank you to our men and women who courageously fight for us to have special days like this. Thank you to our police, firefighters, and EMTs who are there when things go awry. I hope everyone gets to spend this day with people they love and enjoy being around.

I did it! I conquered my 2nd 26.2 Miles!

This weekend was a whirlwind blast. I can’t believe that I conquered another 26.2 miles. After my first marathon 2 years ago, I made it to 20 miles and cursing every step after that. I was thinking, WHAT IN THE WORLD DID I GET MYSELF INTO. I’m so not doing this again. HAHA. Well we all know to never say never.

Earlier this year, I signed up for the TCS NYC Marathon lottery. I was one of the lucky few to get in. And again, I thought, What in the world did I get myself into. But then again NYC Marathon is a HUGE race. I had plenty of time to train and get in the right mental attitude. And boy did this marathon creep up on me before I knew it.

I trained, I got lazy, I got back in my running shoes, and started training again. I ended up feeling less than confident in myself and had to keep reminding myself that I will be ok. My longest run was 17 miles. I wanted to finish between 5-6 hours. I didn’t know what was going to happen to be honest. There was lots of wishful thinking and hoping that I would be just fine. I’m not out there to win the race or break any records. I am out there to enjoy the crowd and have fun with it.

I finished the race (I’ll have a race recap in a few days). I got my medal! I got my NYC Marathon Medal! It was a fantastic experience! Now to rest, get through next week and then start working towards the next goal. I placed my medal up on my special medal rack last night and it was a glorious moment. A sense of accomplishment.

VA Wine Country Half – Half Marathon #9

I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be still on this crazy half journey. When I started running in 2011 I thought I was crazy and totally didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I’m so grateful to be on this journey as much as I curse it sometimes…ok…most of the time.

Yesterday was half #9. It was a great morning for a run. I was nervous since the most miles I had up until that point was 3 on a training run. And in fact, I almost canceled. It was one of those things that I just knew it wasn’t going to be any record breaking personal bests or close to it. I just wanted to finish. I met up with T and D as it was their second half of their journey. It was great to share this experience with them. I’m so happy to share my experiences and what I’ve learned as they train for their first marathon this fall. The first part of the race was great! I had to stop and readjust my shoes to make the laces a bit tighter. Then they were almost too tight but they were ok. It was humid, but we had an overcast so it wasn’t humid and sunny which would have been worse. Around mile 5.5 we hit the gravel road. I thought I was going to be ok ok the gravel but oh no, I wasn’t. I ended up walking a lot of the gravel. And hills…holy hills. Around mile 9 we hit pavement again and that was awesome! It was so nice to be back on the pavement. My left hip took a hit with the unevenness of the gravel and so I’m stretching and dealing that today. I’ll be mended in no time 😉

I finished in just under 3 hours, I started my watch late oops. I’m honestly afraid to look at the results to see what my time really is. I’m disappointed in myself for not training better, but glad that I finished. It happens and we move on to the next race.

The medal was great! The bib was even better! One of the most unique bibs that I am now in possession of. It was very fitting that the run started and finished on the premises of a winery. I know cool right!

The after party was awesome, and so glad to have some other wineries around to taste. I came home from the run and after party and showered, well got food too, and slept. I took a good 2.5 hour nap. I was even in bed early at 9. It was a long/short day if you know what I mean. It was a great day, it really was. I was happy to see the smiling faces at the finish line.

I hope you all have had a great weekend thus far and it continues to be great today!

Cheers!

It’s Monday!

I can’t believe that we are approaching Memorial Day. It seems just like yesterday that the New Year started.

Flat me for Carter’s Run

Me and one of my BRF getting ready for the run

Any who…I had a fun weekend. Saturday was a Carter’s Run 5k. It was to support Dandy-Walker Syndrome and I wrote about it here. It was a great race. Very hot day for sure! We started at 9am and it was a great course. I felt bad for the people who were stuck on Gloucester Parkway but it was for a good cause. I got to see Erin from ErinRunsHappy at one of the water stations. I was so happy to see her around mile 2.5. She definitely put a smile on my face for the remaining tenths of the race. Shortly after that I saw another face I haven’t seen in a few years. He is always happy but he was definitely a guy who you knew when he was mad. He was       and continues to be an inspirational person. He’s done several races and triathlons. So I saw him and his daughter just after the water stop. His daughter was super cute and ran with me for a few.

Sunday morning was The Color Run! This was my 5th tiIMG_5134me running it and having so much fun! IMG_5146Just like my first time I ran it. I ran it with L and J. We got there and were excited to be there. We found J and got all ready to run. It was great morning.  A little humid, but better than freezing. We started our venture out on the course and got really colorful. This year they included a “shine” color station. Lots of glitter! So much glitter! I’m still getting it out of my ears. But that’s ok. We finished and got our medals (also new this year), and went over to the finish party. We did our color throw, and had some more fun before we headed back to our cars. It was a blast and I’ll definitely be back in September when they return to the DC areIMG_5152a.IMG_5155IMG_5127

Week 5 Check In

How is it already Monday!? I feel like I did’t have a weekend or at least it went by way too fast. And now that I’m starting this second sentence on Tuesday just lets you know how busy I was yesterday. Geez!

Last week was a really good week for training. I had some really great runs. I went out of town this past weekend and got in a run on a always pretty college campus. I stopped to take some pictures and hope to post them later. I’m lucky I got to spend Mother’s day with my Mom and Grandmother. My Mom got a call from my sister who is out of the country and I even got to talk to my cousin who is in Hong Kong. So cool!

So far this week has been hot and humid so I’ll need to go for a run later tonight or double up this week. Sorry that the posting has been minimal and so scattered. I hope to get back on track soon. 🙂 Keep rocking!

Quick Update!

I just finished my run, ok maybe that was 2 hours ago. But I finished my 30 second plank (trying to get a better core), stretching and foam rolling (trying so hard to stay injury free). It was such a great day to get out and run! It was and still is fantastic weather. M was a great person to run with this morning! She just listened to me the entire time. I dragged her out of bed (willingly I promise) so that we could go run! She’s awesome for saying that she’ll run with me to help me train for the NYC Marathon! I have other friends that are doing the same! I don’t know what I would do without them because knowing me, I would probably just be lazy and then really be in trouble when it came time to run the marathon in 28 weeks. The sun is shining and I can’t wait to get some more Vitamin D!

Here’s my totals so far for an update:

Todays Run: 3.57 Miles
Week Total: 9.82 Miles
Month Total: 29.55 Miles
Year Total: 118.19 Miles

I hope you all have a fantastic day and are able to get outside and enjoy this great weather!

Cheers! 💜
