Tuesday = Start of Week 3

Hey everyone! I was definitely down for the count at the end of last week. Whatever is going around finally got me. Ick! But I was on the mend and feeling tons better on Saturday. M and I went for a 3.5 mile run and had a great time talking and getting out and for a run on the trail. She was a great companion to have along for the run.

Saturday afternoon was spent with K and we went to a vertical wine tasting which was so much fun. It was great to taste and we definitely enjoyed it before heading to Charles Town for what seemed like a hot second before making our way back home. It was a fun time out and I’m sure it won’t be my last out that direction. It was definitely fun to spend a whole afternoon/evening, ok half a day with K.

Sunday was a slow day, not a whole lot going on so it was nice to relax and recover more from being sick. It was a nice day as well so it was good to get out and walk around as well. But I didn’t do the 35 min walk unless you count the time I was walking around down town at the event going on. I didn’t count it so I hope to get it in sometime this week maybe.

Yesterday I was pretty much useless at work at least for the morning. I was watching the Boston Marathon on my computer and was able to see the men and women finish the events. It was so much fun to watch. I did get a little bit of work done but not nearly as efficient as I usually am. It was also a rest day and I did take that to heart minus 2 laps around my building outside after lunch since it was so nice out. So I did hit my step goal according to my Jawbone Up24.

This morning started week 3 of 30 for my marathon training plan. The weeks are flying by in my opinion, ask me that again in a few more weeks. At first I was dreading this mornings run because it’s the start of another week and it just seemed really daunting especially since I am still getting over whatever sickness I had last week. But knowing that I only had 1.5 miles, it didn’t seem too bad right. Go outside run in one direction .75 of a mile and then turn around and run back. Ok I think I can handle that. I wasn’t expecting much honestly. It was nice a cool, no humidity, and my running buddy at work was great. He is faster but a few minutes per mile but he still hangs by me and lets me set the pace. So we set out on my measly 1.5 mile training run. I felt good, a little stiff the first few tenths but started to really go. We made it to the turn around part and then headed back. The way back seemed to take FOREVER! The way we ran today I like to call no mans land because there really nothing out there. Just the trail and not even trees, it feels so barren versus the other way we run sometimes. But on the way back the last few tenths, I started to pick it up because I wanted to push myself. So we ended at an 8:50 pace (again not normal).

I looked down at my watch to stop it and next thing I know, there’s a new record that I set. Fastest mile record is now set at 9:21! Go me! It’s been awhile since I’ve seen that pace and todays overall pace was 9:22/mile. So tomorrow’s run is suppose to be 3 miles. Not sure how I’m going to do but I guess just take it one step at a time (pun intended) and I’ll definitely need some tunes out there tomorrow to help me keep my pace and mind from wanting to quit. Each run is a journey and I can only get better from here.

I hope you all have a great Tuesday! Make sure you get out and do something fun today!

Week Total: 1.59 Miles
Month Total: 31.14 Miles
Year Total: 119.78 Miles

Quick Update!

I just finished my run, ok maybe that was 2 hours ago. But I finished my 30 second plank (trying to get a better core), stretching and foam rolling (trying so hard to stay injury free). It was such a great day to get out and run! It was and still is fantastic weather. M was a great person to run with this morning! She just listened to me the entire time. I dragged her out of bed (willingly I promise) so that we could go run! She’s awesome for saying that she’ll run with me to help me train for the NYC Marathon! I have other friends that are doing the same! I don’t know what I would do without them because knowing me, I would probably just be lazy and then really be in trouble when it came time to run the marathon in 28 weeks. The sun is shining and I can’t wait to get some more Vitamin D!

Here’s my totals so far for an update:

Todays Run: 3.57 Miles
Week Total: 9.82 Miles
Month Total: 29.55 Miles
Year Total: 118.19 Miles

I hope you all have a fantastic day and are able to get outside and enjoy this great weather!

Cheers! 💜

Tuesday = Start of Week 2

It’s Tuesday! Which means we made it past Monday and we are a day closer to the lovely and ever sought after weekend! It also means that I’m starting week 2 of training for the NYC Marathon! I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be doing this marathon, this year. Honestly I never thought I would be training for another marathon. I was training for last year’s Marine Corps Marathon and transferred down to the 10k since I wasn’t feeling it and mentally just wasn’t in it. After running the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon and walking the last 6 miles I desperately wanted to get out of the 5 hour finish time and into the 4 hours. But last year it just wasn’t meant to be.

This year with the NYC Marathon just 29 weeks away, I have a better mental attitude right now even though I’m running the race by myself. I know that not all days will be insanely good and some days I’ll wonder what made me think I was crazy enough to sign up for another marathon and even question the fact that if I can complete it. In all fairness, I’ve already had a freakout moment wondering if I could even finish the marathon in the allotted time and what my next step would be. I had to remind myself that no matter how slow I go, it’s still 26.2 miles and that I certainly hope that I can finish it.

When looking at training plans that I wanted to work with, I found some that were 30 minutes running 2 times a week; and others that started off with higher mileage. I just wasn’t feeling confident in my abilities starting with a plan like that. So I kept searching for other plans. Which is what lead me to my current training plan. I know it seems silly but starting off with 1.5/3/1.5/3 seemed perfect to get me back on track. My training had been inconsistent over the winter due to working 2 jobs and little sleep. So my 2 half marathons I did this past spring were trying. I still finished, but definitely not my best times by any means. And that is completely ok!

Since I ran the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler on Sunday I decided that today was going to be an elliptical day to get the miles in. I didn’t want to injure myself or have further issues during the training. My mental toughness still needs some work so I didn’t want to defeat myself before I really started to train for the Marathon. Tomorrow is 3 miles and I do hope to get outside for that, it was raining this morning. Another reason for the elliptical. 🙂 It’s still the same right? Ok, I will keep telling myself that it’s the same. Haha.

1.8 Miles – Today’s Total
21.23 Miles – Month Total
109.87 Miles – 2015 Total (that’s sad…I don’t know if I’ll meet my goal for this year)

Friday = Rest Day

This week has been good so far training wise. I did a whopping 6.8 miles over the last 3 days and I have faltered already. I know! I can feel all the beady eyes looking at me so you all can stop now. I haven’t cross trained the last 2 days like I had planned. BUT it’s the first week so I should be ok. I was very cautious about stretching and foam rolling regardless how much I actually ran. I don’t want to get injured again. I have had some issues with ITBS and Plantar Fasciitis. Both are not fun by any means. I wouldn’t wish those on anyone in my wildest dreams.

Thursday morning’s run was a real struggle. I didn’t want to get out of bed and go work out. I kept telling myself that I would do it later but the chances of that happening are slim to none so I should just get up early and do it. So reluctantly I did get up and do it. But let me tell you that mental struggle was real on those 1.5 miles. WOW! I know my mental toughness isn’t what it use to be but I was able to power through and had to keep psyching myself out of what was going on on the treadmill. The mental part took more than I could handle yesterday. I was drained after my run for sure.

I have a virtual 5k to run tomorrow. Sparkle Athletic is running the Ragnar So Cal relay this weekend for the girls who can’t. They are raising money for Rett Syndrome. It affects mainly girls and robs them of the ability to walk, talk and play. This year they set up a virtual 5k to help fundraise for the Girl Power 2 Cure foundation. They will be running 200 miles and started this morning so hopefully they will have a fun time and enjoy each of those 200 miles. So I’m running tomorrow to join them, virtually of course and I can’t wait. I will also be running the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. I can’t believe that the time has already arrived. It seems like yesterday that we were signing up for the lottery. The trees should be out and it should be a great weather day. I’m really looking forward to it. As well as running with a fantastic group of ladies.

It’s going to be a good weekend and I can’t wait to conquer these miles.

Cheers! 🌸

Day 1! NYC Marathon Training!

Well I made it the 1.5 miles and actually went 1.65 miles! Go me! I started the run out really rough and huffing and puffing and the doubt started to creep in about how I didn’t know how I was going to make it the next 29 weeks. I know, I know, when my mind goes…it really goes off the deep end. Haha. Luckily I had one of my running buddies with me and we were able to talk, well me struggling to talk and he talk like our run was nothing but a walk. OK….So I’m not cut out for this (right now) and thank goodness I’m starting out with these measly miles before it really kicks off.

I did wear my sparkle skirt and visor this morning. I was laying in bed willing myself to go back to sleep and that I’d do the run after work or at lunch instead. But glad that I got up and run this morning instead because chances are I wouldn’t have done it later. With it being the first day of marathon training, I had to do something to kick it off. So sparkle it was. It definitely made me smile and I hope that others don’t think I’m too crazy wearing my sparkle skirts during my training runs. Sometimes you just need that little extra magic that the sparkle gives you.

So I made it the 1.65 miles and then came back to my office where I was able to use my foam roller and stretch, and don’t worry I am lucky there are showers too! I am desperately trying to get better about those 2 things this time around and hope that they will help me recover and remain injury free. I also did a 30 second plank so that I could strengthen my core and back to help with everything else. And all I could think about was the song by Ludacris “Rollout“. Haha. The things we end up remembering. Anyways, I was able to start today off on the right foot. I hope to do some PiYo tonight and then keep the running trend going tomorrow. It feels good to get back on a schedule, but I always hate the first few weeks getting back on that schedule.

I hope everyone has a great day today! Get outside and enjoy these nice weather days too! 🏃💨

A Brand New Week

I hope everyone had a good Easter or even good weekend. I know I did. It was my sister’s birthday so we had a double whammy today with celebrating. It was nice to visit with family for a few hours. I was able to get the beginning of my week’s meals prepped yesterday which was a good feeling since I’ve been majorly slacking in that respect in the last few weeks.

This week also begins my training for the NYC Marathon. It’ll be a simple week with two 1.5 mile runs and two 3 mile runs and then a short 30 minute walk next Sunday. BUT…I’m running in the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler next Sunday! So in a sense I’ll already be ahead on my “training”. I can’t wait to start again but at the same time so scared because I don’t want to be disappointed in myself. I know that there will be some training set backs and I just hope that they are few and far between. I have my journal set up and I will share more about that later. I also have my excel file where I can keep track of everything as well. I’m taking M to dinner later this week for her Birthday but we are also going to discuss some “shop talk” and figure out what is the best course of me and my training. I picked a 30 week training plan because I wanted to ease back into training and have enough time to get the kinks out getting back into the swing of things. My mileage doesn’t start to really kick up until June or July. I already have some days that I have to switch around due to travel, other races and such. It’s going to be a long 30 week ride.

I’m hopeful that the weather cooperates this week to allow some outside runs and hopefully in the morning, but if not then they will be at lunch on the treadmill or elliptical or even possibly when I get home from work.  I need to make sure that I start these runs off on the right foot. I have plenty of people that I’ve got lined up for some runs or at least shorter runs with me. Not many are quick to say “Hey I’ll go with you on that 20 mile run you have to do”. HAHA. I do have a few friends that I’ve recruited to ride their bikes while I run on my longer runs so I’m not alone or I’ll have friends meet me at certain points and we’ll run a certain length and I’ll keep on going.

I hope I have enough of it together this week and don’t have an “oh my” moment before the end of the week. Hope you all have a wonderful week! I’ll definitely keep you updated on my progress!

Cheers! ✌️

Throwback Thursday…Way back to 1941

This isn’t running related but definitely family related. I was visiting my grandmother this past weekend. She’s a young 96 years. Still living in her own house and able to move without major issues. The last time I was able to visit was back at Christmas when we went up to visit for the day.

But while I was walking around I found this gem of a picture.

October 4, 1941

October 4, 1941

I took a picture of it with my iPhone so it’s not the best quality but I showed my grandmother later and she could remember everyone in this picture. Pretty good for a 96 year young lady. I never got to meet my grandfather but I have heard numerous stories and how remarkable he was. His best man was his dad and so that is the older man in this picture. My grandmother was born in 1918 which would have put her at 23 years young. She couldn’t stop smiling when she was looking at the picture. Good Memories. I hope to hang this picture up in my house one day.
